Contexts for Heritage Engineering(previously known as Introduction to Heritage Engineering), is a professional development course co-designed by Engineering Heritage Australia and the University of Canberra.
The course consists of introductory online learning followed by an onsite workshop to Adelaide, on the 24-25 July 2025. Completion of the two optional assignments will enable you to get feedback from professionals working in the area of heritage engineering. The course typically includes teachers from backgrounds in structural, civil and mechanical engineering, and materials conservation, with a focus on local teachers. Course participants include a variety of heritage-related professions in addition to engineers. This enables you to develop professional and local networks to kickstart your career in heritage engineering.
This course is taught by Experienced Heritage Engineers from South Australia, and Heritage conservation staff from the University of Canberra.
This course is open to all interested parties, and will be of particular interest to practicing engineers.
Access to the internet and computer. Ability to attend the onsite workshop.
A Certificate of Participation will be awarded on completion.

Natalie is a PhD student at the University of Canberra, with her research focusing on fossil fuel usage in operating heritage machinery. Natalie holds Bachelors degrees in Fine Arts from the University of Newcastle, and Cultural Heritage Conservation with First Class Honours from the University of Canberra.
Natalie's professional experience includes roles in public sector cultural institutions in objects conservation, registration and as a heritage officer. Natalie also works as a conservator in the private sector.
